TwoTrees SP5 Upgrades!

Short answer: TwoTrees SP5 Upgrades is my free set of printable upgrades for the TwoTrees SP-5 (Sapphire Plus) CoreXY printer: the Mjolnir direct-drive hotend assembly, X and Y axis stabilisers and flex bed guards. Together they fix the stock printer's weakest points: poor hotend cooling and performance, pulley flex at high acceleration, and fiddly flex-plate alignment. What upgrades are included?
The SP5 upgrade set is three printable parts groups:
| Upgrade | What it fixes | Hardware |
|---|---|---|
| Mjolnir direct-drive hotend assembly | Weak stock hotend performance and cooling; adds easy belt tensioning at the toolhead | Phaetus Rapido (1.0 or 2.0), Orbiter 1.5, BTT Nitehawk 36, BTT Eddy probe, CPAP fan |
| X and Y stabilisers | Pulleys flexing during fast moves, which limits usable acceleration | Printed parts and fasteners |
| Flex bed guards | Hard-to-align flexible build plate | Printed parts |
What is the Mjolnir hotend assembly?
Mjolnir is a direct-drive toolhead for the SP-5 that replaces the stock Bowden hotend. This version is built around a Phaetus Rapido hotend (version 1.0 or 2.0), an Orbiter 1.5 extruder, a BTT Nitehawk 36 toolhead board, a BTT Eddy probe and CPAP part cooling. The Nitehawk 36 simplifies wiring to the toolhead and has a built-in ADXL345 accelerometer for input shaping; if you don't use a Nitehawk, there is a mount for a separate ADXL345 on the side. The original, simpler version with a PINDA-style probe and the stock fans is described in Mjolnir hotend assembly for the SP5.
What do the X and Y stabilisers do?
The X and Y stabilisers are printed braces that hold the motion-system pulleys steady during fast movements. On my SP-5 they made a big difference to the acceleration I can use without artefacts, and they tidy up the look of the printer.
What are the flex bed guards?
The flex bed guards are printed edge guides that make it quick to drop the flexible steel build plate into the right position every time.
What is planned next?
The SP5 upgrades in progress are:
- A front panel with a BTT Knomi 2.0 display, BTT HBB and macro buttons
- A CPAP fan mount
- A BTT Octopus Pro mainboard mount
- Printable side panels
Earlier work on this printer: more SP-5 upgrades on the way, the Pi mount and the Lerdge X to FLY CDY adapter for the Sapphire S.
FAQ
Are the TwoTrees SP5 upgrades free?
The SP5 upgrade STL files are free to download on Printables; you only pay for the hotend, extruder, electronics and fasteners.
Which hotend versions does Mjolnir support?
Mjolnir supports the Phaetus Rapido 1.0 and 2.0.
Do I need the Nitehawk 36 board?
The Nitehawk 36 is recommended because it simplifies toolhead wiring and adds an accelerometer, but there is an option to mount a separate ADXL345 if you wire the toolhead without it.
Does this fit the Sapphire Pro or Sapphire S?
The upgrade set is designed for the TwoTrees SP-5 / Sapphire Plus. The Sapphire S has its own parts on this site, linked above.
